It had been a long, exhausting day at work, so I sighed with relief when I sank into the plush booth at my favorite bar. I was supposed to be meeting my best friend Mandy for our weekly drink and gossip session, and I was eager to finally relax.

After ten minutes, and no Mandy, I went ahead and ordered a gin and tonic. I sent Mandy a text: “Hey girl, where are you?”

Nothing. Ten more minutes passed and, feeling fidgety, I shot off another message. “Umm…helloooo? We’re meeting at 6 like usual, right?”

My drink level was dropping quicker than usual—probably because I didn’t have any company or conversation to distract me—and I found myself on my second drink pretty quickly. My head was feeling a little loose on my neck, and I was debating ordering some twice baked potato wedges covered in cheddar cheese and chives when a hand on my shoulder made me jump.

I was slow to process it, thinking maybe it was Mandy, even though if I’d thought about it I’d have realized this hand was too big and too strong to be a woman’s. It came as a total shock when a deep male voice rumbled into my ear.

“Sorry if I’m disturbing you,” it said, “but I couldn’t help but ask if you’d like some company.”

I was buzzed, and it made me sassier than usual when I spun to meet the owner of the hand. “What,” I snapped, “just because I’m female and alone at a bar, I must want male company?”

Whoa. Most of the time I hated being approached by men at the bar, but at least this one had asked if I wanted company instead of sitting down and throwing one-liners at me. …And he asked politely. Right as I realized how rude I must have sounded, I processed how attractive the man standing next to me was. He must have been at least 6’3”, with broad shoulders clad in a well-fitted suit, and his dark brown eyes—almost black in the dim light—shone intensely at me from under wavy dark brown hair.

His lips pursed in a not-entirely-unfriendly way, and he just stared at me silently, like he was waiting.

I felt myself blushing. “Sorry,” I said. “I’m just irritable because my friend seems to have ditched me. Honestly, I would appreciate some company.”

He rewarded this statement with a small smile. “I’m Luke,” he said. Something about his voice sent electricity straight down my spine.

When Luke folded his sturdy frame into the seat across from me, he just held up a finger and the waitress magically appeared. He ordered a whiskey on the rocks and gestured to me, saying, “My friend here would like another of whatever she’s having.”

“Oh,” I said awkwardly. “I’m Ava, by the way.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” he said, full lips quirking up into the faintest of smiles.

“What friend were you supposed to be meeting?” Luke asked the question like we were in some sort of strange interview and I felt myself growing even more nervous. I hooked a finger in my dark blonde waves and started to twirl it—a tell-tale sign of nerves to anyone who knew me.

“Mandy. She was my college roommate. We meet every Friday—I don’t know where she could be.”

“Well,” responded Luke, “I don’t know if I can actually replace your friend, but hopefully I can distract you.”

There was something mischievous in his delivery of the word ‘distract’ that sent a thrill through me. I tried to ignore it. There was no way I was going home with a guy I’d just met at a bar. For starters, I was 26—way too old for that kind of thing, and secondly, this guy was a walking ‘dangerous but sexy Mafia’ cliché. I liked guys who acted human, thank you very much.

“So, Luke,” I said, “tell me about yourself.” My eyes were narrowed in challenge. I wanted to break the tall dark and mysterious illusion as quickly as possible.

He chuckled easily in a way that startled me. “Where should I start?”

I didn’t expect him to be so open and for a second, I couldn’t think of a response. “Hmm. What do you do for a living?” I asked, feeling like that was a somewhat appropriate question for a total stranger.

“I own a small publishing house. We do a quarterly lit magazine and a small number of novels. I really like to focus on young writers and the emerging ebook market.”

Oh. That wasn’t mysterious at all, actually. “You own your own business but you wear a suit to work?” At this point I was looking for reasons to be irritated by Luke. He really was unfairly attractive.

A full-bodied laugh slipped past his lips in a way that I couldn’t help but smile at. “Oh, God no. I had a fancy schmoozy-type meeting with some other publishing higher-ups today, and I thought I’d take advantage of looking halfway decent by wearing this monkey suit out for a drink or two.”

Well, damn. I couldn’t even fault that logic, as it was totally something I’d do. We eased into conversation, and I slowly realized that the only really intimidating thing about Luke was his dazzling smile, which sent a ripple of desire through me every time it tilted up the corners of his mouth.

Of course, some of that might have been the alcohol, too. I was drinking more than I had in a long time, but I didn’t really want to stop. I knew I’d regret it in the morning, but right then I was happily drunk and chatting with a very handsome guy. Things couldn’t really have gotten better.

Embarrassingly, my typical “wild lifestyle” started to show when I started yawning around 9:30. “I’m so sorry,” I apologized, feeling embarrassed and old. “I’m usually in bed at ten. I have early mornings.”

Luke flashed me that heart-stopping smile. “But tomorrow’s Saturday. I’m sure I could come up with a way to keep you awake a while longer.”

Heat flashed through my cheeks. “That probably isn’t a good idea.” I was too drunk to resist for long, so I stood to go.

“I’m sorry, but I really need to go.”

I felt bad for so quickly dismissing him, so as I clumsily straightened out my pencil skirt, I added, “But you can walk with me to a taxi if you’d like.”

“Of course.” He stood up smoothly, apparently unaffected by the alcohol, and I grabbed my purse as we headed out the door.

As soon as we stepped outside, and before I could even look for a cab, Luke’s tall body was nudging me sideways and backwards until my back bumped up against the wall.

I opened my mouth to protest, but no sound came out of my dry throat. He was close enough that I could feel the warmth radiating off his torso, feel the small puffs of his breath brushing the top of my head. I shivered at his nearness, and his gaze moved downward to lock with mine.

“Luke?” I breathed. I didn’t even know what I was going to say, but I had to break the intense silence somehow.

“Ava.” He smiled and leaned closer, driving all intended speech swiftly out of my head. His lips were close enough that our breath intermingled and I felt
something inside me catch flame.

Oh no. No. This was not happening. But his muscular body pinned me to the wall and somehow I found my chin tilting up and my eyes fluttering shut. Before I could think it through, he had caught me up in a deep kiss, so hot my knees went weak. His firm lips held mine in place, not hesitant in the least, and I forgot every good reason I had for not having sex with him. I felt Luke’s hand thread through the waves at the back of my head and pull me even closer, as I whimpered against his unrelenting lips. He pushed his body against mine, pressing his bulging erection against my stomach. A whimper escaped my lips as he began kissing me deeper.

After an indeterminate amount of time, Luke pulled back slightly, and I’m ashamed to say I might have groaned in disappointment. His grin was just as enchanting as before when he murmured, “Let me make love to you.”

I gathered every last ounce of willpower and whispered, “No.”

His strong thumb and forefinger caught my chin and forced me to meet his piercing brown eyes. “What?”

Clearing my throat anxiously, I spoke up again. “No, sorry. I don’t go home with guys I just met.”

Luke’s lips tilted upward charmingly. “We don’t have to go home. I’m sure we could find another place.” He glanced suggestively at the alleyway next to us, and his husky tones combined with the naughty idea had me biting my lip in indecision. I couldn’t believe I was actually considering this.

No, no, no. I couldn’t. The last time I’d hooked up with a guy I barely knew, I’d managed to fall hopelessly in love in just a few weeks—until his wife walked in on us. I was never making that mistake again.

At last, feeling almost regretful, I shook my head. Luke moved back a few inches with a playful frown, but his eyes were still smiling.

“Okay,” he said slowly. “I’m not going to do anything you don’t ask me for…” I felt a strange cocktail of disappointment and relief, but before I could really process it, Luke was talking again. “But here’s the deal.” His voice dropped and he slowly, inexorably leaned toward me again. “You give me your phone number, or I will get you to the point where you beg me to take you home—or to take you right here in the street.”

With the last word, his lips were so close to me I could almost feel their softness on mine. Desire shot through my body from the tip of my tongue to the soles of my feet, so strong I felt faint. I was almost panting with need, and with a sharp moment of clarity I realized he was right. He could make me ask—beg, even—for anything. If he teased me enough, I would end up with my skirt around my waist in a grungy alley, and worst of all, I would like it. Already the idea sounded almost appealing, when I knew with every fiber of my being that fully sober Ava would hate it. No way. I wasn’t playing the whole ’50 Shades’ game. “555-0184.” It rushed out in one frantic breath.

Luke laughed quietly, stepping back to fish his phone out of his slacks. “Slow down, ” he said. “Say it again.”

I gritted my teeth, praying to sound calm. “Five, five, five. Oh, one, eight, four.”

  “Perfect.”

Before I even realized we were done, he’d stepped back quickly and waved down a cab. A gust of warm air swirled against me suddenly, as the cab pulled up. I didn’t even say goodnight until the car door was closed. I was afraid I’d change my mind if I let him get within touching distance again. When I got to my apartment, I collapsed drunkenly in bed, trying very hard to not think about Luke—which was not working at all. I reached over into my nightstand and grabbed my vibrator and some lube, slipping the flexible pink toy down between my legs and turning it on. The low hum of the vibrations, shot sparks of desire straight to my clit, as I began moving it around in a slow, rhythmic motion, fantasizing that it was Luke’s glorious cock that I’d felt earlier. I felt my orgasm build with each swirl of my toy, and as soon as I felt my orgasm building, I moved the toy off my clit and plunged it deep into my sex, letting out a throaty groan as it filled me up and stretched me out. I had my two fingers take over the rhythm on my clit, and between the external and internal stimulation, I came fast and hard, loudly panting Luke’s name. I pushed my vibrator deeper into me, as my orgasm coursed through my body, sending ripples of electrical impulses through every muscle in my body, making my pussy clench tightly around my toy. A smile of intense satisfaction slowly spread across my face right before I drifted off into sleep.

When my cell phone woke me up the next morning, things didn’t go so smoothly. I had a hangover trying to claw its way out of my skull, and my phone was vibrating loudly right next to my ear every few seconds. When I forced my eyes open, I was almost disappointed to see Mandy’s name on the screen, instead of anything that could have been Luke. I had six new texts, which explained all the buzzing. I slid open the lock screen.

  “OMG!!!”

“Ah Cass I’m so sorry! I totally spaced!”

“I’m a crap friend, but David brought home a bottle of wine…”

“You can deduce what that led to. I really am sorry though.”

“Ugh, please don’t ignore me. I feel awful! I can’t believe I left you at the bar alone.”

“It’s late for you to be sleeping. Are you dead? DID YOU GO HOME WITH SOMEONE?”

I tried to find the keyboard through bleary eyes.

“It okay Mandy. Did my go hoe with amino dry but somebody anted to.” Damn autocorrect.

Okay, those weren’t words. Instead of sending it, I stumbled into the bathroom and splashed some water across my face. Feeling marginally more awake, I tried again.

“It’s okay, Mandy. I didn’t go home with anybody, but some guy sure wanted to. I might have let him buy me a few too many drinks. …Haven’t been this hung over in a while. Lol!

My best friend must have been anxiously awaiting for a response, because it only took her a few seconds to text back.

“Good for you! It’s about time you had some fun. Why didn’t you go home with the guy? Not hot?”

I sighed, fingers already tapping the screen. “Super hot. Too hot. Too charming. Idk.”

“>:( Cass… I love you, but you’re ridiculous. You better see him again. I will harass you endlessly.”

I was done thinking about Luke for the morning. “We’ll see,” I sent. Luckily, Mandy knew when to let something go, so she just replied with a smiley face.

Since I was already up and moving, I reluctantly decided to stick to my normal morning plan. I cringed my way through a quick shower before slipping on my running clothes. My legs made it out the door and toward the park steadily enough, although my run was more like a stiff jog than the usual fluid motion. Still, I made it all the way around the trail loop—although it might have taken me fifteen minutes more than it usually did.

I had stopped at the water fountain, feeling victorious but faintly nauseous, when I felt my phone buzz in the zippered pocket of my leggings.

I pulled it out, expecting Mandy again, but the text was from a number I didn’t know. My thumb pushed it open quickly. Half of me nervously hoped it was Luke, but only half. The rest of me knew talking to him was a terrible idea.

“Come to my place tonight. I’ll make you dinner.”

I snorted loudly, drawing a strange look from the old man on a nearby park bench. “Who is this?” I texted back, feeling smug and clever.

“You know who it is. Say yes to dinner. I won’t be a guy you just met anymore.”

The tips of my ears went red. I knew exactly what he was referring to. “Sorry,” I replied. “I still don’t know you.”

I stared at the phone screen for a few moments, but it went black without any reply. I knew it was for the best, but my feelings were a little hurt when I put it back in my pocket as I took off at a slow jog towards my apartment.

My phone never vibrated noticeably, so I was pleasantly surprised when I got back to the apartment and saw another text message from Luke.

“Okay, new plan,” this one read. “Meet me at the county library in an hour. You can help me do s
ome volunteer shelving and get to know me.” I was taken by surprise—yet another thing that didn’t fit with Luke’s mysterious-dangerous-sexy-man image. Well… it was a public library, for heaven’s sake. Not the sexiest of places, and full of people. I found myself hurriedly jumping into the shower.

Somehow, in the shower stall my hand grabbed the pretty-smelling soap and the razor, making sure my legs, armpits, and bikini area were entirely smooth. I told myself it needed done anyway, but my conscience yelled at me. What are you doing? This is not something you do for casual volunteering. I drowned it out by singing a few lines of my favorite song, and threw on some scented lotion and my favorite low-cut top for good measure.

When I got to the library, I climbed the stone steps out front very slowly. I actually had a card there, but hadn’t been in a few months, and everything from the innocent flowered landscaping to the sliding glass doors seemed more intimidating knowing that Luke was somewhere inside.

A cheerfully handsome man stepped out of the door, wearing jeans and a simple black t-shirt. It took me a long moment to recognize Luke—somehow I’d been expecting the same intimidating quality he’d had in his suit, but this side of him was sunnier and more accessible. I didn’t like the way his smile warmed me, or the pleasing way his muscles filled out the contours of the clingy shirt.

Determined to put some space between us, I reached to shake his hand, realizing belatedly how absurd it must have looked. Luke just laughed, not unkindly, and brushed a kiss against my cheek. The feeling of his day old stubble made my stomach flip-flop, and I bit my lip to hide a silly grin. I wiped my sweaty palms against my jeans.

“So, uh, what are we doing?”

He smiled indulgently and held open the door. “Sorting books so we can shelve them. I’m assuming you have a pretty firm grasp on the English alphabet.”

  I couldn’t help laughing. “I think I can manage.”

Actually, it turned out to be more of a skill than I’d thought. I wasn’t exactly struggling, but Luke could do a whole cart in like a third of the time it took me. I was also flustered by his proximity—we were in a small, windowless room, and our arms kept brushing as we reached around the wheeled carts. The touch looked innocent, though it felt like anything but. As much as I wanted to blame Luke, he never intentionally touched me and didn’t even say anything suggestive. It was just my pulse pounding away, my skin feeling over sensitized, my breathing coming shallowly.
